The Add/Update Contact block is the most important block in Forms. It writes a respondent's answers directly into their Contact profile, and it controls how submissions are matched to existing contacts or used to create new ones.
Drag the Add/Update Contact block onto the canvas from the right-hand panel, then configure its Properties and Fields.
Contact matching
By default the block includes three fields that SwiftFox uses as its matching criteria:
- First Name
- Last Name
When a form is submitted:
- If no match is found on these fields, SwiftFox creates a new contact.
- If a match is found, SwiftFox assigns the submission to the existing contact and updates their profile.
Because matching relies on First Name + Last Name + Email, missing or mismatched data results in a new profile being created rather than an update to an existing one.
Properties
In the block's Properties:
- Set the question label shown to respondents.
- Optionally enable the Organisation field to capture or update the contact's organisation.
- Optionally enable Set Organisation as your contact's Primary Organisation, even if they already have one so the captured organisation becomes their primary organisation.
Fields
The Fields area controls which profile fields the block captures:
- Click Add Field to add a field.
- Choose from default fields (for example, Street Address, Mobile) and your custom fields.
- For custom fields, SwiftFox automatically pulls in the pre-configured options defined on that field — you do not need to re-enter them. This includes Date custom fields: add one and respondents get a date picker to choose the value, which is written straight to that custom field.
- Answers entered against these fields are written directly to the contact profile.
Per-field controls
Each field you add can be configured individually:
- Label override — change the displayed label for this field.
- Placeholder — set placeholder text inside the input.
- Hide label — hide the field's label.
- Required — make the field mandatory.
For select-type fields (fields with predefined options), you can additionally:
- Choose how answers are displayed: dropdown, checkboxes, radio, toggle, or separate buttons.
- Hide specific options so only the choices you want are offered.
When to use Add/Update Contact vs Question blocks
- Use Add/Update Contact when answers should be saved into profile fields (default or custom).
- Use Question blocks for one-off, moment-in-time survey answers that should not update the profile (see Question blocks).
Note: when a form is distributed via a tracked SwiftFox email link, you do not need an Add/Update Contact block — the recipient is identified automatically by the unique link (see Managing & exporting forms).
