Maps — Workflows: step-by-step

This guide brings the full Maps process together as repeatable, end-to-end workflows.

A) Create a map with a List Builder layer

1. Go to Maps from the left menu and click Add new data to your map.
2. Under Add your data, click Select data from the SwiftFox List Builder.
3. In Create name of this data layer, name the layer.
4. Set Record Type to People or Organisation.
5. Under Choose Point Color, pick the colour for the markers. It cannot be changed later.
6. Build your criteria in the sections below, and check the count at the bottom of the panel — for example, 264 record(s) have geographic coordinates.
7. Click Add data layer to map, then Done. A dot appears for each qualifying record, labelled with the record's name.
8. Zoom and pan the map, and click a marker to see its card and open the record's profile.

B) Overlay additional layers

1. Click Add new data to your map again.
2. Repeat steps 3–7 for each new layer — its own name, Record Type, Choose Point Color and criteria.
3. Use Your Data Center on the left to show or hide layers and adjust their opacity so overlapping data stays readable.

C) Add a built-in census or demographic dataset

1. Click Add new data to your map.
2. Under Add data from SwiftFox data library, click Select Australian Datasets or Select New Zealand Datasets.
3. Expand a category (Demographics, Economy and Jobs, Education, Election Results, Government Areas, Health or Transport), then a sub-category, then the measure.
4. Read the Description and Data Custodian shown on the right so you know how to read the shading.
5. Click Add data layer to map, then Done.
6. Click a shaded area to see that area's figures.

D) Load your own map file

1. Click Add new data to your map.
2. Under Add external data, click Upload your own data.
3. Drag a KML, GeoJSON or CSV file onto the drop area.
4. Click Add data layer to map, then Done.

The file is displayed locally in your browser. It is not saved or uploaded to SwiftFox, so it is gone once you leave the map. See Uploading your own data file to a map.

E) Manage the layers

1. Show or hide any layer with its toggle in Your Data Center.
2. Expand a layer with its arrow to reach its legend, Opacity slider and Zoom To Extents button.
3. To remove a layer, click the bin icon on its row.

F) Save the map and capture the view

1. Click Save your map, enter a Workspace Name, and click Save.
2. To bring it back later, click Add new data to your map, pick it under Your saved Maps, and click Add data to map. Its layers are added alongside anything already on the map.
3. To capture the map as an image, set the view you want and click the printer icon at the top right of the map. This produces an image, not a data export.
