All of a map's data layers are managed from Your Data Center, the panel on the left of the Maps landing page. From here you can show and hide layers, change how strongly they display, zoom to a layer's data, and remove layers you no longer need.
The layer panel
Your Data Center lists every layer on the map — List Builder layers, built-in datasets, uploaded files and layers brought in from a saved map. Each layer is a row with its own controls, so you can manage layers independently, which matters as soon as several overlap.
Each row has:
- a toggle to show or hide the layer
- the layer name
- a bin (delete) icon
- an arrow to expand the layer's settings
Show or hide a layer
Use the toggle at the left of the layer's row. Hiding a layer takes it off the map without deleting it, so you can focus on one dataset at a time and bring the others back when you need them.
Hiding is also the fix when a dataset layer is covering your markers and you cannot click them — see Interacting with the map.
Expand a layer's settings
Click the arrow at the right of the layer's row. The expanded layer shows its legend, an Opacity slider and a Zoom To Extents button.
The legend
The swatch shown under an expanded layer is a key to how that layer is drawn — the point colour for a List Builder layer, or the shading scale for a dataset. It is a picture, not a control: clicking it does nothing.
Adjust opacity
Drag the Opacity slider to make a layer more or less transparent. Lowering the opacity of a broad layer, such as a shaded demographic dataset, lets you read the layers stacked underneath it.
Zoom To Extents
Click Zoom To Extents to move and zoom the map so that all of that layer's data is in view. It is the quickest way to find a layer's records when the map is sitting somewhere else.
Delete a layer
- Find the layer in Your Data Center.
- Click the bin (delete) icon on its row.
Deleting a layer removes it from the current map. It does not change any of the underlying records.
Changing a layer's colour
A layer's colour is set when the layer is created, under Choose Point Color, and cannot be changed from Your Data Center afterwards. To recolour a layer, delete it and add it again with the colour you want.
Tip: using these controls together
When comparing several datasets, combine the controls — a distinct colour per layer chosen at creation, reduced opacity on broad layers, and toggling layers off when you want to focus on one.
