Tags classify a Post so it can be found, filtered, and segmented later. They are the key to keeping the Activity Feed useful as it grows, and they connect Posts to List Builder and the Posts Action Centre.
Applying a tag when composing
- In the post composer, click Add new tag.
- Choose a tag from your pre-configured list (tags are defined in settings).
- Apply one or more tags as needed.
- Finish the Post and click Post.
Tags are drawn from a list maintained in your account settings, so the same vocabulary is used consistently across everyone's Posts. This consistency is what makes filtering and segmentation reliable.
Hashtags
You can also reference topics inline using hashtags in the post text. Hashtags and tags both let you narrow the Activity Feed to a topic, so you can pull up every Post on a given subject quickly.
Why tags matter
Tags do three things beyond labelling:
- Filter the feed — narrow the Activity Feed to only Posts carrying a given tag or hashtag. See Filtering the Activity Feed.
- Power List Builder queries — segment Contacts and Posts by tag in Lists (List Builder).
- Feed a Posts action centre — if you set one up, surface tagged Posts for bulk follow-up and action. See Posts and the Posts Action Centre / List Builder.
Best practice
- Agree a small, consistent set of tags in settings before rolling Posts out widely, so the same topic isn't spread across several near-duplicate tags.
- Apply tags at the time of posting — it's far quicker than retro-tagging.
- Use tags that map to how you'll want to filter or segment later (e.g. by topic, campaign, or follow-up type).
