Custom fields are the backbone of SwiftFox. They store all the important bits about your members, contacts, or organisations, from preferences and roles to payment statuses and internal tags.

Sometimes you need to update the same custom field across multiple records instead of clicking through each one and possibly developing a very close and intense relationship with your mouse. The list builder makes this entire process a breeze.

Start by creating a new list using the list builder. Give your list a name. Choose between people or organisations and set your search criteria. We've got our criteria ready to go in this example.

Need to refresh on building lists from scratch? We'll check out our earlier video “Mastering the List Builder”. From here click Update Custom Fields. A drawer will slide open asking which custom field you'd like to update. Then choose your action. You can set a value, add a value if it's a list style field, or remove a value.

For this example, we're going to set a new value for the mailing list custom field as “Yes”, because someone may have recently imported 5000 new contacts and forgot to set this field in their import whoops!

This means every record in your list will get this same value. Once you've made your selections, select confirm and it's done.

Just like that, all your records are updated faster than you can say “bulk update custom fields”, and that mistake that I made is forgotten.
