Campaign categories

Campaign categories are managed in Settings → Campaign categories, described there as "Manage the categories contacts can subscribe to or opt out of". They do two jobs: they classify each campaign, and they populate the checkboxes recipients see on their email preferences page, where each category can be subscribed to or unsubscribed from independently.

You choose the category for a send in Step 1 (Campaign) of the builder, in the Campaign Category field.

Creating and editing a category

Add on the Campaign categories screen opens a panel headed Email Category:

  • Title — the category name. Required.
  • Make internal — see Internal categories below.
  • Presets — Everyone, Current Circle or Only me, as shortcuts for the access list underneath.
  • Add access for — build the access list by User, User group or Circle. Add me adds yourself. Pick who, set an Access level of Full Access, View and Edit or View only, then Add.
  • Save to keep the category, or Cancel.

The list screen then shows each category's Status and Access alongside its Name.

Internal categories are not offered to recipients

Ticking Make internal sets the category's Status to Internal, and an internal category does not appear on the email preferences page — recipients never see it and cannot subscribe to or unsubscribe from it. It stays fully available to your team: an internal category can still be picked in the Campaign Category field when building a campaign.

Use it for categories that exist to classify your own sends rather than to give recipients a choice.

Two things worth knowing:

  • The name is not what makes it internal — the tick is. A category called something like "Financial (internal)" still appears to recipients if Make internal is not ticked.
  • Access is a separate control. The Access list governs who in your organisation can use the category, not what recipients see. If a colleague cannot find a category in Step 1 (Campaign), check whether its Access is limited to a user group or circle they are not in.

The email preferences page & the unsubscribe block

Every campaign should include an Unsubscribe content block, available in the Design step's content palette. The unsubscribe / preferences link takes recipients to their email preferences page, which lists the categories as checkboxes and offers UNSUBSCRIBE FROM ALL as well as SUBMIT. Including it keeps your sending compliant.

The look of that page — its title, description, category checkboxes, buttons, logo and colours — is configured separately in Settings → Email preferences.

Email tags are separate

Email tags are internal labels for classifying and segmenting campaigns. They are maintained in Settings → Tags & categories → Email tags, and applied in Step 1 (Campaign) using the Select tags field. They are never shown to recipients — don't confuse them with campaign categories.
